Chapter Fifteen

The designated area for the explosive drop was no more than a field set next to a small area of woodland. It had been chosen because it was in a valley, but both areas had advantages and disadvantages. Dropping it in a field allowed easier recovery, but little cover. Dropping it in a wooded area made it harder to spot, but by its very nature gave excellent concealment. Drops were inaccurate at the best of times, and it appeared that tonight they were in the lap of the Gods — or at least the wind direction and the navigational skills of the pilot.

They arrived early and spread out throughout the area, at the same time keeping a look out for the local police, Nazis and the plane that was going to drop the explosives out of its hatch. The atmosphere was tense, the waiting unbearable and, despite the cover of darkness, the sky was clear and the moon far too bright for their liking, resulting in every one of their senses being on edge. A snap of a twig, a rustle of leaves, a distant cry of a fox were all sounds they expected to hear, yet tonight they instantly set their hearts racing. Charlotte found herself gravitating towards Pierre — or was it him towards her? Whoever made the first move, eventually they were standing no more than a few feet away from each other.

Sully came over to join them. ‘I think I might have heard a plane on the other side of the wood. I’m going to check it out.’

Pierre nodded and watched him leave. He surveyed the shadows and in the dim light and saw Gérald. Using hand signals, he informed him of Sully’s search area. Gérald nodded and passed the message onto Raymond and Bernard. Gradually, a low rumble could be heard coming from the opposite direction. They searched the sky and saw a small, dark shape emerge from a distant cloud.

‘This must be it,’ said Pierre, turning on a light and shining it into the sky. The plane flew over their heads, then immediately circled back. Charlotte tracked it across the sky, afraid that if she blinked it would disappear. To her relief, an object with a fluttering white tail was expelled from its belly as if giving birth. For a moment Charlotte thought she had lost track of it, until suddenly the small, white tail exploded into the perfect skirt of a parachute, slowing its descent so it swung gently down to earth.

Pierre cursed. ‘It’s going to land in the woods. Keep an eye on it!’

They both began to run towards where they had last seen it disappear into the canopy of trees. Pierre slipped a penknife from his pocket as they entered the wood, preparing to cut the explosives free if they were caught in the branches of a tree. The visibility deteriorated markedly as they moved deeper into the wood and there was no clear path to follow. The ground was littered with branches, broken twigs and sprawling roots.
